COVERAGE & METHODOLOGY
Clear about what we know.
The map combines selected published records from UK Power Networks, National Grid Electricity Distribution and SSEN. It is not a complete UK outage map. Northern Powergrid, SP Energy Networks, SP Electricity North West, independent networks and Northern Ireland remain official-link routes in this release.
Freshness and failures
An automatic collector checks the selected feeds every five minutes. An open map checks for the latest saved data every minute. Provider timestamps and our fetch time are separate. Data older than 15 minutes or from a failed feed is marked stale or unavailable. A failed check retains last-known records; it never implies there are no outages.
What a point means
Points are approximate areas, rounded to three decimal places. They are not affected properties. References are unique within each source; we do not sum them as a nationwide outage count. UKPN omits small incidents affecting five or fewer customers where they cannot be aggregated. A recent record may concern planned work, and current lifecycle status remains unconfirmed where source codes have not been verified.
Postcodes and networks
A geographic match centres the map but does not identify the network supplying a home. No matching record is not proof of power. A record disappearing is not proof of restoration. Timezone-free incident dates remain unconfirmed; restoration estimates are not guarantees.
Northern Ireland
BT formats are recognised, but are not sent to Postcodes.io because commercial NI geography rights have not been secured. Use NIE Networks for current outage information.
Data centres
Two sourced pilot campuses are mapped. Their published full-build-out IT capacity includes expansion. Actual daily consumption and current grid supply are unknown. Household comparisons are conditional capacity illustrations, with assumptions visible. Proximity to an outage does not establish cause, priority or continued grid consumption.
Sources and reuse
Adapted from UK Power Networks Live Faults and SSEN Real Time Outage Dataset, under CC BY 4.0. Fields are normalised and coordinates rounded. Supported by NGED Open Data: Live Power Cuts, under the NGED Open Data Licence. No operator endorses this website.
Background tiles are provided by OpenStreetMap on a best-effort basis. If the background is unavailable, source lists and official links remain usable. Public accounts, reports, subscriptions, advertising and X collection are not enabled.
